So I have no real problem with Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody. Her story is kind of inspiring, if unlikely, and Juno's story was pretty great, if you can ignore all the in-script chatter that nearly drowns the plot. I repeat -- she's a good writer. But shit like this makes me want to set alight her script pages.
I'm not saying that I have to like someone's personality in order to like their writing. My ex-boyfriend is evidence of that. I like to believe I'm more subjective (and less superficial) than that. But it seems to me that she's trying to create this image of herself. This story, this amalgam. It's almost like she wants this mythos surrounding her. The E! Online story itself reveals several contradictions in her "personality," or "character," that make dents in the image she's trying to project. It's not that someone can't have personal contradictions; it's a human right. Diablo Cody's are so outlandish, however, that they can't actually naturally live in one human being.
I think I'm annoyed that she thinks she can just ignore etiquette and good manners and respect, just because it's part of the image she wants to project. This shoe guy has no real reason to lie. Why would he say that he created a pair of shoes for her, with her input, when she didn't? It would make him look better if he said "I created this pair of shoes for Diablo on my own merits, without her input, and look aren't they beautiful, and I'm such a genius!" So I see no reason why he's lying. I see her not wanting to wear high heeled shoes to the Oscars (regardless of the reason she might have given), which is also fine. But just ditching the shoes, specially made for her, with a blog posting? That's just downright fucking rude.
In the article, a "supersecret" source says that Cody was hurt by people calling her a hypocrite for wearing shoes that Juno wouldn't wear. Now, this is where I begin to think that she's A) trying way too hard to be this person she's constructed for everyone, and B) she's a little crazy. Juno isn't a real person. Diablo Cody isn't Juno. Regardless of what she wrote or how she wrote it, she's entitled to do what she likes. But Diablo Cody (not her real name, in case you couldn't tell) obviously wants to ride this Juno train until everyone is tired of her and plain Ellen Page. The last nail in her coffin of fakeness is from the quote that E! used from her blog. Diablo Cody actually said that she was annoyed that the shoe people were using her to promote the "stupid shoes" when this is a time that she just wants to "hide."
BULL. SHIT.
Diablo Cody did an interview alongside Ellen Page (who was completely boring) on my favorite podcast, Filmspotting. Now, I love the guys that do it, and I know they have a lot of listeners, but they gave an interview to a podcast. A quick search on Google turns up no fewer than 15 interviews. On the first page of results. She's done interviews with newspapers in Minnesota, with websites that I've never heard of, as well as stopping at every microphone she's seen since Juno broke big. If Diablo Cody wants to hide, she's doing a fucking horrible job at it. Yes, someone who is scared and annoyed by all the fame would show up at the Oscars wearing that horrible leopard print sack, smile, and stick out her leg. No. I'm pretty sure that Ms. Cody welcomes the fame. As well as the chance to promote her image, which is "Juno -- Hardcore." She was a stripper! But she was talented the whole time! And she has a smart mouth! She doesn't stick to convention! She blogs!
While her personality (at least the one she puts forth in the media -- or won't stop putting forth) bugs the living fuck out of me, I'm going to reserve judgment on her writing until her next movie. As I mentioned, I wasn't terribly fond of the incessant chatter present in Juno. There are so many, many words in that film. I'm waiting to see if she can restrain herself. Or even get another movie made. If it's "Juno II," I'm done with her. And I wager most everyone else will be too. I'm hoping, beyond hope, that underneath all that rebellious adolescent bravado, lies an actual writer. I'm hoping that she can have a long, storied career, and eventually drop this ridiculous character that will completely sink her if she keeps it up.
Honest to blog.
(Ok, I just threw up a little in my mouth)
