What a freaking hullabaloo. Seriously. A few weeks ago, I couldn't click on a single news site without hearing about how Kelly Clarkson was throwing off the oppressive yoke of Clive Owen to do her own thing, and that her own thing was decidedly lame. I know that Clive is the Grandfather of all good music (not to mention O-Town!), but every story I read made it seem like Kelly was nothing without the magic hitmaking juice of The Clive. THE CLIVE!!!
Fucking naysayers. They had me expecting nothing from Kelly. Now, Kelly can laugh in their faces, because her new album is serious growth, and serious music. She co-wrote everything, and every song sounds personal and real. And angry. Very angry and forlorn. I think that "Since U Been Gone" hit a nerve for Kelly, and she decided to follow that urge. Wisely. Her voice is at its best, and she looks amazing. Though some of the lyrics are a little simplistic, and a few of the melodies are strange and almost claustrophobic, she's working hard to become her own artist in an industry run buy old men. While professional reviews seem to be largely mixed, fan reviews are largely good. Shut up, New York Times.
Notable Songs: "Never Again" -- Tell that cheating son of a bitch to go fuck himself, Kelly. I feel you. I really do. "Sober" -- For all of us out there trying to find out who we are (or at least remember). It's a hypnotic song. "Be Still" -- A version of "Goodbye My Lover" that's not wimpy and wussy. Thank you. "Irvine" -- An eight minute epic of gorgeous vocals and heartfelt sentiments.
