Last night was the Tony awards, by far one of my favorite award shows. "Spring Awakening," an adaptation of an 1891 German play about teenagers, sex, and angst, swept nearly all of the major awards. The cast is full of young unknowns, but the personnel of the show is star-studded. The music and orchestrations were by Duncan Sheik, who most people know from his only hit, the late 90s "Barely Breathing." It was produced by Tom Hulce, a pop culture icon in himself. Hulce played Pinto in Animal House, and Mozart in Amadeus. He'd disappeared in recent years before showing up, nearly unrecognizable, in last year's Stranger Than Fiction (as the company therapist).
While I don't know much about "Spring Awakening," I'm going to find out more for sure. The clip I saw on the Tony's made me want to see it badly. Below is a music video montage of the song "The Bitch of Living," which they performed at the Tony's.
It's really frenetic and impassioned. I think it captures the insanity of teenagers really well, including their tendency to over-dramatize. Plus, the guys in it are just too cute for words. Totally adorable.
Coming soon: the 5 songs you should be listening to.
