Over the past year, I've been introduced to a ton of new music. Music that I'm sure most people aren't listening to, or even know exists. There's too much good stuff out there for the music in my little corner to go unheralded.
No Children -- The Mountain Goats: Oh man, this song is fucking brilliant. Hatred, co-dependence, and a catchy piano line. Does he hate her because he can't live without her? Or is she just horrible? Though the title of the song doesn't actually appear in the song itself, you get the message.
Grace Kelly -- Mika: Mika is the love child of Freddie Mercury and the Scissor Sisters. Seriously. Grace Kelly is the gem on an otherwise disappointing album, and what a gem it is. I challenge anyone who hears this to sit still. Or understand what it's about. Regardless, modern disco rocks.
Hold Me Now -- Polyphonic Spree: Polyphonic Spree make some of the best power pop ever. It's epic and sweeping, with instruments sounding and voices chorusing.
Your Rocky Spine -- Great Lake Swimmers: One of the most sensual songs I've ever heard, it uses a vast, rugged landscape as a metaphor for a woman's body. "Your body was the map, I was lost in it" is a lyric. Need I say more? Listen to this song now.
To Destruction -- Dolorean: The man who sings this song fully recognizes that his love is his downfall. He can't lie to her, he can't run away from her, he gets so wrapped up in her and everything about her. Beautiful harmonies just top off a very melodic, sexy song.
Ordinary Life -- David Mead: This guy's voice is so expressive. As long as you stay away from his most recent album, Tangerine, you can't miss. Ordinary Life isn't just about having dreams that are a little too big for your situation; it's also about finding a love that allows you to dream bigger, and that you didn't expect.
I Love The Unknown -- Clem Snide: Simple and hooky, this song speaks to everyone. Especially anyone who has careened their way into the unknown head first and hoped for the best.
If you want any of these songs, let me know. But everyone should.
